BLOG POST #1 ------university course selection systems (in canada) are stupid;;
So since I'm 18 and a recent university frosh, I have currently experienced a kind of stupidity that cannot be unrivaled; the course selection system (this one is called ROSI, for repository of student information). Although unlike high school, you do have the complete freedom and choice to pick your own courses, professors, times, and even friends (classes are HUGE so you'll get to meet lots of different people!). However, the way the system is organized (at least at my university) is incredibly stupid. I have been so frustrated with the system and the lack of organization, capability, and simple logic. I'm not going to go in to detail since the who process is very detailed and complicated. I was surprised I even knew what to do and actually got to PICK courses. Some of my friends were left stuck on waiting lists because they couldn't login on the day of course selection. Mind you, we're all very eager asians so when the system opened at 6AM, we were the ones refreshing on our computers like madwomen. Needless to say, in this battle of human vs. computer, ROSI (I don't even know how to pronounce it. Is it RAWSY or ROWSY...-__-) definitely came out on top. Thanks university, for coding a useless program that defeats the purpose of having a system.
After being able to login, there are a lot more examples of the flaws of the system, leaving me facepalming every 5 seconds:
1. Not accepting course codes. (Uh..how else am I supposed to PICK MY COURSES.) 2. ERROR: you are not logged in. Please try again. (<= you will never log back in again.) 3. You do not have permission to enroll in this course. (A life science student cannot enroll in first year Biology? excuse me?) 4. We cannot process your selections at this time. (srsly? THEN AT WHAT TIME?! ARHGH) 5. Conflicting courses. (ROSI cannot comprehend the notion of ALTERNATING COURSES, meaning the course is taken biweekly instead of weekly. This goes for my 3-hour intensive Physics, Biology and Chemistry labs which I chose to take on the same day of the week, and so it shows up as bright red ERROR on my schedule.)
Keep note that these all happened while the system was ultra slow. I was so frustrated and wanted to smash something. But despite all those errors, I managed to pick courses for the Fall semester, and got waitlisted for many in the Winter semester. I'm didn't even get to pick my profs, since by the time SOMETHING worked for me, all the good ones were taken. All I could was pick the courses I needed to take for my program of study and hope that the times don't conflict. That was how I ended up with these 3 hour night classes at end at 9:30PM. I have this innate fear of getting mugged or raped on my way home from these night classes, since the university is located in the heart of the city (downtown) where there are many many many people and many many many beggars, rapists, and generally people I don't want to encounter (being a teenage female and all).
